Criteria and procedure for inclusion of journals

Date Range

The principal objective of Periodicals Index Online is to shed light on older journal content that has, largely, not been indexed or digitised previously. For this reason, we only index material published no later than 1995 (we index from Volume 1, issue 1 up to this date or the final issue, whichever is first). We also require that a journal has a substantial backfile preceding 1995.

Subject coverage

Periodicals Index Online provides contents information for journals from across the arts, humanities and social sciences and the range of subjects is wide within these parameters. Prospective inclusions must be compatible with this coverage.

We aim particularly to index high-quality scholarly journals, but some general interest titles are included as they are potentially of value to researchers.

Language

The majority of journals in Periodicals Index Online are English-language. We do, however, include a significant number of journals in other languages, including numerous multi-language titles.

Format

Newspapers, journals composed entirely of pictorial matter and journals that are themselves indexes (i.e. abstracts, current contents services or bibliographies) are not included. Monograph series are included, however.

Procedure

If you believe that your journal meets the above criteria, please contact us to alert us to this title. We require, as a minimum, the journal title, ISSN and your return contact details, but please supply any further details that you feel may be helpful in our evaluation. Sample tables of contents, for example, are particularly useful. If it is decided that your publication is a suitable candidate for inclusion, you will be contacted and advised of the next step.
